Pith Purge Ozone Generator Review

The use of ozone for deodorizing hunting gear, and even real-time scent control while hunting, has become a mainstream technique for successful hunters across the world. As a result, there are now many products on the market making various claims about what they’re able to do. There is no doubt that ozone is a powerful tool to kill bacteria-causing odor, but it’s important to make sure the product you’re using is up to its intended task. Some units are intended for, and fully capable of, being used in the field. Others are better suited for use at home, in your vehicle, or even in your hotel room while on a hunt out of town. While the in-field units can be used at home, this doesn’t make them practical. The Pith Purge Portable Ozone Generator is one of the units not intended for field use, but this has allowed the design process to make it a better option for the home or vehicle.

When I first opened the generator from Pith, I immediately noticed its heft. This isn’t to say that it’s heavy, but that it feels like it’s well-made. Many other units are mostly plastic, and I have personally had issues with their durability. The metal body of the Purge is solid, both in feel and function. It’s also ribbed, giving it a nice feel in the hand and making it easy to grip. The controls on the unit are conveniently located on the top, are simple to use, and clearly display the mode and battery life. Like many units, the Purge is designed to fit in a vehicle’s cupholder, making it perfect for deodorizing your vehicle – of which it does an exceptional job.

The Pith Purge is designed to emit 400mg/h which is in line with some other models on the market. I’ve used these other models and I can say that the Purge emits as much ozone or more. The unit is also designed to run in 15-minute intervals, which is plenty of time to saturate a truck cab, for instance. If you need to run it again, you can easily start it back up to run for another 15 minutes. The timer is a feature of the Purge that I quite like. Whether I’m deodorizing my truck, a room, or even a bag of hunting clothes, I don’t want to worry about forgetting it and leaving it running for a few hours, or until it dies. Again, this unit not being designed for field use allows it to have a simple timer function that’s appropriate for any job around the house.

Is ozone safe to use?

Ozone, however, is not appropriate for all deodorization tasks. For instance, it is advised that ozone generators not be used in occupied spaces because they can cause respiratory irritation. The Pith Purge has an included ion function whereby negatively charged ions attach to air pollutants and odor molecules causing them to fall to the ground. There are many air purifiers on the market using this technology, and it’s a nice feature included in the Purge to give it some added versatility. I have personally used the ion feature in the kitchen several times after frying food, or after something becoming unfortunately burned in the oven or toaster. The timer for the ion function is set to an hour rather than the 15-minute period for the ozone.

How long does the battery last on the Pith Purge?

Battery life for the unit allows it to run for about 6 cycles of ozone. The ion function uses much less battery, so I’ve yet to get to run out while in this mode. This is more than adequate for its intended use, even on the ozone setting. It also comes with a charging cable. One thing I would’ve preferred is for charging to be done via micro-USB to make it usable with many other chargers. If I happen to be on a trip and forget the charging cable for the Purge, I’ll be out of luck even though I have micro-USB cables in every vehicle. The battery life indicator on the unit could also be a bit more accurate. For instance, when using the ozone function, it’ll show a full charge for about 4 uses, drop one bar on about the 5th use, and then die on the 6-7th use.
