How to Hunt October Scrapes and Rubs for Mature Buck Success

October is often dismissed by deer hunters as a slow, frustrating time in the whitetail woods. But smart bowhunters know this month holds untapped potential—especially when it comes to hunting scrapes and rubs. From early-season scouting to late-October ambushes, here’s how to turn October sign into a filled tag.

Why October Still Matters for Deer Hunters

The so-called “October Lull” often sends hunters home early. Bucks break up from bachelor groups, food sources shift, and daytime activity drops. But that doesn’t mean you should hang up your bow.  Personally, I’ve found a lot of success during the month of October, as well as my son.  Boston has named October 17th his lucky hunting day as he bagged two bucks on back-to-back years on October 17.

In fact, October is the best month to gather actionable buck intel that will help you throughout the rut and late season. According to research from the National Deer Association, bucks are still moving during daylight in October—they’re just moving differently and more cautiously.  Here’s a breakdown of how to hunt each phase of October for Whitetails.

Early October: Using Rubs to Find Buck Travel Routes

The first half of October is prime time for fresh buck rubs. Mature bucks begin laying down sign close to bedding areas as they shift into pre-rut mode.  Food sources also play a key role in buck rubs during this time of year, so focus on rubs scattered down a trail to locate a bucks travel route to and from food.  If you pay close attention, you can even determine the buck’s direction of travel when he made the rub.

What Rubs Tell You:

  • Direction of travel: Bucks typically rub facing the direction they’re going.

  • Proximity to bedding: Rub clusters often indicate nearby bedding cover.

  • Buck size: Larger rubs on thicker trees can suggest an older, more dominant buck.

Scouting Tip:

Walk rub lines and backtrack them to potential bedding areas. Use apps like HuntStand or OnX Hunt to mark rub locations and look for patterns. Placing trail cameras along these routes can help you identify target bucks and their movement timing.

Mid to Late October: Focus on Scrape Activity and Food Sources

By mid-October, scrape activity increases sharply as bucks begin laying down territorial markers.  Shift your trail cameras towards scrape lines and community scrapes to inventory the deer in your area.  Most scrapes along field edges will be visited at night, but when the conditions line up, you never know what might happen.  For instance, the first cold front in October can be dynamite.  I’ve also noticed a trend around mid-October where bucks will daylight a couple of days between October 15 and October 19 in my area.  My small circle of influence has found tremendous success over food plots and bait piles during this week, but it’s weather-dependent.

Scrape Hunting Tips:

  • Primary scrapes often appear on field edges and along major travel corridors.

  • Licking branches are crucial; bucks revisit these year after year.

  • Fresh tracks and urine spots indicate active use.

  • Trail cameras will tell you everything you need to know!

Late October (October 20–31) marks the peak of daylight scrape activity, according to trail camera studies from Penn State University. Bucks are actively checking scrapes, especially during cold fronts and just after rain.

How to Hunt Scrapes Effectively

Many studies show that over 80–90% of scrape visits by mature bucks happen at night. But here’s the often-overlooked factor: Most bucks scent-check scrapes from downwind during daylight without stepping into the scrape.  You’ll notice that the best scrapes are in the biggest terrain pinches close to where does congregate, whether it be food sources or bedding cover.  Bucks will often scent check the downwind sides of these areas hoping to cross paths with a receptive doe coming into estrus a tad bit earlier than the rest of the herd.

Proven Tactics:

  • Set up downwind: Position yourself 20–30 yards downwind of active scrapes.  Maybe longer in certain situations.

  • Add fresh scent: Use scent drippers with products like RAW 30+ Peak Estrus

  • Use trail cameras: Focus cameras on nearby trails and downwind approaches, not just directly on the scrape.

According to a 2021 Field & Stream article on scrape hunting tactics, hunters with downwind setups are 40% more likely to catch a buck in daylight near a scrape.

rattling and calling for deer

Combine Calling and Rattling for Late October Success

The last week of October offers prime calling and rattling opportunities. Bucks are aggressive, territorial, and curious. Pre-rut testosterone is peaking.  Bucks are on the move in search of early estrus does, and they’re willing to fight for them.  The last week of October is a great time to buck a giant buck on the ground.  Don’t be afraid to get aggressive with calling and rattling during this time.  This is your last chance to pattern a buck before the rut kicks off.  If you get a daylight trail camera photo of a buck two days in a row, you’d better be calling in sick to work on the third day.  Also, morning hunts are now effective, as well as all-day sits.

Calling Tips for October:

  • Use soft grunts and contact bleats early.

  • As Halloween approaches, escalate to rattling sequences.

  • Focus near scrape clusters and bedding cover.

Beat the November Rush

The final week of October lets you hunt unpressured deer before the November influx of hunters arrives. Public land parking lots that sit empty all month will fill up during the first week of November.  This is one of your best chances to beat the crowds and hunting pressure to target big bucks on public land.  In fact, many serious deer hunters prefer this week on the calendar over any other week during the month of November.

By targeting scrapes, rub lines, and pre-rut calling during late October, you can fill your tag before the DIY hunting crowd even hits the woods.

Final Thoughts: October is Your Hidden Opportunity

Don’t waste October sitting at home waiting for the rut. Scout rubs, hunt scrapes, and use calling to your advantage. By making strategic moves now, you’ll increase your odds of tagging a mature buck—before hunting pressure forces them nocturnal.  If you’re interested in taking a bowhunting road trip, this is your best chance to beat the crowds.

Whether you’re hunting close to home or on a DIY road trip, October’s scrape and rub activity offers a window of opportunity that serious deer hunters can’t afford to miss.
