how to keep your feet warm while hunting in the cold

Arctic Shield Boot Insulators Review

Camron Stover

What’s all the hype behind Arctic Shield Boot Insulators?  For years, people have probably been telling you that you need to pick up a set to keep your feet warm but for some reason, you’re still trying to be convinced that you really need them.  I bought my first pair more than ten years ago and they held up great until I forgot them in the ground blind after a successful hunt. Six months later after being chewed on my rodents, it was time to replace them and it was a must-have purchase going into the hunting season because I’ll never go another season without them.  This might be the best investment I’ve ever made in hunting gear and here’s why.

Arctic Shield Boot Insulators

ArcticShield boot insulators contain our patented Retain heat retention technology, that captures greater than 90% of your body heat. They slip over your shoes or boots, keeping your feet warm so you can stay out longer. The ArcticShield boot insulators are lightweight and packable.

How do the Arctic Shield Boot Insulators fit?

The only issue you might run into is choosing the appropriate size to fit your boots.  I’ve found that different boots require different size boot insulators.  When in doubt, go up a size.  My Irish Setter Vaprtreks are not the size as the bulkier LaCrosse Alpha Burly Pro 800s.  For the LaCrosse boots, I need a larger size so that I can zip them up.  I’ve had to wear them unzipped in the back before and they do not work as well as they do fully-zipped.  In summary, buy them large enough to fit over the boots you plan on wearing when the temperatures drop.

How can the Arctic Shield Boot Insulators Save You Money?

One feature that you won’t find advertised online about the Arctic Shield Boot Insulators is how much money they’ll save you.  Imagine being able to wear the same boot on the opening day of bow season as you would sitting in the blind in December.  That’s exactly what I do.  I usually wear Irish Setter Vaprtrek boots all season long, even when the temperatures begin to drop because I’m able to stay warm by simply throwing on the Arctic Shield Boot Insulators.  If the temperatures are really cold, I’ll throw in some Hot Hands or heated socks.  However, not having to buy a $200 pair of bulky hunting boots is great!  I remember forgetting my hunting boots on a cold November morning and the Arctic Shield Boot Insulators saved the hunt because I was able to wear my tennis shoes during the morning hunt without issue.

How to Keep Your Feet Warm When Hunting

This could be a blog post in itself, but keeping your feet warm in the winter is a hurdle for most.  However, adding the Arctic Shield Boot Insulators will certainly help.  Here’s my system of keeping my feet warm when the temperatures drop.  It starts with socks.  I’m running midweight Darn Tough socks for the majority of the season.  The heavier socks are just a little too much for me during long hikes.  If I know I’m going to be hiking a long distance and sweating during the walk to the stand, I’ll change socks on before I make my final approach to my hunting area.  Staying dry is essential.

Once I’m in the stand or blind, I slide on my Arctic Shield Boot Insulators.  Don’t wait to your feet get cold to put them on, they’re designed to retain heat, not create them.  If you need the extra boost of warmth, throw in a large Hot Hand.  Now, smart hunters will activate them 30 minutes prior to use, whether that be on a truck ride to your hunting destination or your long backcountry hike into the National Forest.

Typically, I don’t need anything more than 800-gram Irish Setter Boots, Arctic Shield Boot Insulators, and good socks.  However, if you’re cold-natured, try some heated socks or heated insoles.  Just don’t forget to bring some extra batteries.
