Beretta DryArn Base Layer Review

Camron Stover

Base layers are one of the most important aspects of your hunting clothing.  Often overlooked, quality base layers can provide temperature control and help with moisture-wicking and some even claim to have odor-reducing qualities.

When creating a hunting clothing system, it’s important to choose a base layer that is designed to improve the quality of your hunting experience, such as the Beretta DryArn Base Layers.  The Beretta DryArn Base Layers are uniquely designed with different types of fabric in various areas of the body to provide the best fit and performance possible.

There are three options in the Beretta DryArn Base Layer line-up, including Pants, Long-Sleeve T-Shirt, and a Short-Sleeve T-Shirt.  Recently, I had the opportunity to review each of these products and here are my thoughts.

Beretta has developed a new line of base layers from DryArn fabric that blends the latest technologies in design and fabric to incorporate a microfiber polypropylene fabric that is resistant, lightweight, insulating, and breathable.

Price: $79

• Breathable Compression Fit
• Moisture-wicking fabric
• Promotes mobility
• Seamless Design constructed with polypropylene and elastic polyamide

My first impression of the Beretta DryArn base layers was the long-sleeve t-shirt.  As soon as I took this shirt out of the box I was in disbelief.  How is this tiny little thing going to fit?  Did they send me a kids medium by mistake?

After giving it a look-over, I noticed how lightweight these base layers were and how unique the body mapping 3D design is.  You can tell that the engineers who designed this system of base layers really put a lot of thought into it.  No two sections of the base layer look or feel the same and it’s designed to accentuate the hunter during the hunt.

After trying on the shirt, I was surprised by how good it felt against the skin.  The combination of technology that is incorporated into the DryArn base layers is way more advanced than I can describe, but I like the way Beretta has combined the compression-fitting fabrics and 4-way stretch fibers throughout this shirt.  It’s perfect for mobile hunting adventures when temperatures begin to drop.

• Soft, comfortable waist-band

The Beretta DryArn base layer pants look and feel great.  I really like how lightweight they are and how comfortable the waistband felt.  Even with me needing a size larger, I still wasn’t uncomfortable when wearing these base layer pants.  Most “soft and comfortable waistbands allow the pants to slide down or fail to secure a tucked in upper layer, but these pants did their job in that department.  FYI – I always tuck my base layer shirt into my pants.  This keeps my shirt from sliding up my back and during early season hunts, it keeps ticks away from my body.  If you’re not tucking your shirt in, you should be!

After wearing both the pants and the shirt together, I instantly realized that these base layers are perfect for the mobile hunter.  Whether you’re a run-and-gun whitetail hunter that likes hiking deep into public land or a small game hunter who’s putting miles on their boots each day in search of grouse, pheasants, rabbits, or other game; these base layers are perfect for your active cold weather hunts.

When temperatures begin to drop, these pants will be a great way to add warmth, without adding bulk or weight.  Also, the moisture-wicking capabilities are very helpful when keeping a mobile hunter dry, thus warm!

Beretta DryArn T-Shirt Short-Sleeve Shirt Review

Beretta DryArn T-Shirt – Short Sleeve Review

Beretta has developed a new line of base layers from DryArn fabric that blends the latest technologies in design and fabric to incorporate a microfiber polypropylene fabric that is resistant, lightweight, insulating, and breathable.

Price: $69

• Breathable Compression Fit
• Moisture-wicking fabric
• Promotes mobility
• Seamless Design constructed with polypropylene and elastic polyamide

My first impression of the Beretta DryArn base layer short sleeve t-shirt was – Wow!  This thing looks like something you’d wear out running around town to impress the ladies, not something you’d hunt in.  The aesthetics of this shirt, just like the long sleeve version, is very appealing to the eye.  However, don’t be fooled because this shirt performs as well as it looks.

The Beretta DryArn Short-Sleeve T-shirt is loaded with the same great features as the long-sleeve version, it’s just missing the sleeves.  Many hunters like to go sleeveless, especially bowhunters.  This reduces the amount of bulk on your sleeves, thus reducing the likelihood of your bowstring slapping your sleeve.

Now, I don’t think the sleeves would be a hindrance to a hunter with the design of the Beretta DryArn shirts, so if I had to choose between the short-sleeve vs. the long-sleeve, I’d go with the long-sleeve version.  Also, with the moisture-wicking abilities of the DryArn fabric, I feel that the short-sleeve shirt would actually be a disservice to the engineering design and intentions for the base layers’ intended purpose.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the short sleeve-shirt and it fits just like the long-sleeve shirt, just without sleeves.

What is DryArn?

Beretta has teamed up with Aquafil to incorporate their innovative microfiber into their performance base layers that excel in extreme conditions, such as hunting.  Dryarn fiber was chosen due to its wicking effect, which conducts perspiration away from the skin to the outside where it evaporates. This leads to a sweat expulsion rate that is nearly eight times higher than polyester, which leaves the wearer dry and comfortable.  DryArn fiber does not allow humidity to collect close to the skin, and it retains none of the microorganisms that create odor in garments made from synthetic fibers.

What temperatures are the Beretta DryArn Base Layers designed to be utilized in?

The DryArn base layers are designed to be utilized in cold environments.  They’re extremely thin and lightweight and don’t look like a layer of clothing that you would wear during cold weather hunts.  However, this material is designed to wick moisture away from the body, which keeps you warm.

Are Beretta DryArn Base Layers better for mobile hunters or hunters that sit in treestands and/or ground blinds?

The DryArn base layers are great for mobile hunters.  The moisture-wicking abilities of these base layers really help keep you warm after you stop moving and do a good job of keeping you from over-heating while moving.  The 4-way stretch fabric improves mobility when compared to other base layers that I’ve hunted with in the past.

How do Beretta DryArn Base Layers Fit?

Beretta’s DryArn base layers model the European sizing and fit.  Typically, the European fit is smaller than American sizes.  If you have an athletic body type or a slim body type, you shouldn’t have an issue.  Me on the other hand, I’ve got a belly and I never felt comfortable in a Medium.  Had I gone up a size, I don’t think I would’ve had an issue.   I will say that even though the medium was skin tight, it wasn’t extremely uncomfortable.  For the record, that’s not me in the photo, but both guys are wearing a size medium and they have completely different body types.

  • Designed for temps between 32 and 50 degrees
  • Perfect for the mobile hunter
  • Moisture management garment

Beretta DryArn Base Layer Review Summary

After spending time inside the Beretta DryArn Base Layers, I’d have to say they impressed me.  My initial thought when I took them out of the package was that these aren’t for me.  They reminded me of the old Under Armour Compression Fit base layers that I hated but the Beretta DryArn base layers quickly changed my mind after putting them to the test.

These base layers are marketed towards cold weather hunts, but I feel that I could comfortably wear them in moderate temperatures (32 to 55 degrees) but I would need to add a mid-layer as temperatures began to drop below 32 degrees.  Remember, your hunting clothing should be a system, not a one-layer fit’s all kind of thing.

If you’re a mobile hunter, you should definitely consider trying these out for yourself this fall.  Although they fit tight, they’re not uncomfortably tight.  To be honest, if I hadn’t gained so much weight recently, I would love these base layers.  They’re extremely lightweight and pack up really small when traveling.  You could throw them in your backpack, truck, or UTV and never realize they’re there.

The biggest hurdle for me was the fit, but if you buy a larger size than what you normally wear, that shouldn’t be an issue.  Or if you’re in better shape than I am, like the guys pictured in these photos above, then you won’t have to worry.  These base layers are part of a system, so stay tuned to see how they’re blended into my hunting clothing system in future hunts.
