Gunskins Camo Shotgun Wrap Review

Jansen McCloy

Turkey season is just around the corner and there’s no better way to spruce up a classic shotgun than to add a vinyl wrap to it like this one from GunSkins.  Ole Gradey, my trusty Remington 870 Express Magnum was due for an upgrade, and the Gunskins Shotgun Wrap Premium Vinyl Sheet in GS Vietnam Tiger Stripe and I couldn’t be happier with my choice.

I’ve always been hesitant to add camouflage wraps or tape to my guns in fear of permanently damaging the gun.  Purchasing a shiny new gun is always an option, but I’ve grown quite fond of Ole Gratey and I look forward to extending its useful life for years to come.

Initial Thoughts on the GunSkins Premium Vinyl Wrap

I ordered the GS Vietnam Tiger Stripe and within days it was at my doorstep.  The packaging was very nice and each individual piece was labeled, making the installation a breeze!  Before I attempted the installation, I watched the YouTube video posted below, and reviewed the directions that came in the package.  The detailed directions allowed me to transform my old shotgun into a gun that looks brand new and ready for more adventures chasing longbeards for years to come.

Installation of the GunSkin

The best advice for installing the GunSkin that I can give you is to follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer that you’ll find in this video.  The most important part of the process is getting the oil and grease off of your gun and new guns are usually the worst.  Once your gun is clean, wipe it down with rubbing alcohol to ensure there’s no debris between the gun and the vinyl wrap.  If you mess up, don’t worry it’s fixable usually.  Simply heat up the vinyl wrap to remove it, then reapply it properly.

Tips for Installing a GunSkin on Your Gun

  1. Use a sharp blade that will allow you to make smooth cuts in the vinyl.
  2. The use of a gun vise speeds up the process and allows you to keep both hands free to work the vinyl wrap around the gun.
  3. If you make a mistake, don’t worry, the oversized vinyl wrap is large enough that you can take it off and reapply it.
  4. For irregular-shaped butt-stocks or other accessories, you will want to use a Large Gear Skin instead.
  5. Use a gun-specific degreaser and a small brush to thoroughly clean your gun before installation to ensure the GunSkin sticks.
  6. Newer guns tend to be more oily, so you might need to clean them twice.
  7. Apply rubbing alcohol to wipe off any dust or debris before installing the GunSkin.
  8. Use heat as you install the GunSkin, it helps the material to conform.  A heat gun is best but a hairdryer can get the job done.
  9. To remove the GunSkin, heat the material with a heat gun or blow dryer, then peel it off. If there is any residue left behind, use rubbing alcohol or Goo Gone to remove it.

GunSkin Shotgun Wrap Review Summary

Each year, I contemplate in spending hundreds of dollars on a new shotgun for turkey hunting.  My old faithful Remington has been with me from the start and it’s seen its share of turkey dinners in the past, however, time hasn’t been kind to Ole Gradey and it was time for a makeover.

Installing a camouflage shotgun wrap to my old gun was just the ticket to get me ready for turkey season.  Not only did the wrap save me several hundred dollars, but it brought life back to an old friend, ensuring years of use, and maybe one day I’ll pass this gun along to my kids and finally purchase a new one for myself.  Until thin, Ole Gradey will be busting beaks and looking great doing so.  Who knows, maybe the boys will want a new GunSkin of their own one day. but I have to admit that the GS Vietnam Tiger Stripe looks sweet!
