Kuiu Kutana Storm Gaiter Review

Matt Poissant

Gaiters are an essential accessory for active hunters, whether chasing elk in the steep vertical terrain in the Rocky Mountains or turkeys in spring.  Quality gaiters, such as the KUIU Kutana Storm Gaiter are designed to keep dirt, rocks, sticks, and other debris out of your boots or early-season shoes.  Gaiters also protect your pant legs, keeping them clean, dry, and protected from rocks, sticks, and thorns.

Out-of-the-Box Impression

The Kutana Gaiter feels rugged, plain, and simple.  You can feel the quality and attention to detail upon inspection. Additionally, they have a great length that allows them to sit high on the calf.  Determining the appropriate side for each gaiter is simple, just look for the logo and it will always be on the outside.  When it comes to quality, very few brands are comparable to KUIU, so my expectations are high for these gaiters.

The Details

The Kuiu Kutana Storm Boot Gaiters is considered the ultralight option.  Perfect for those hunters counting ounces.  The pair only weighs a mere 7.7 ounces. The Torain 3-layer durable stretch nylon material is a great option to allow these gaiters to move with you.  This material is finished of with a K-DWR treatment to help keep the water out.  Kuiu does consider these to be both waterproof and windproof.

The hook and loop anchored bootstrap allows adjustability for use with different-sized boots.  The strap appears to be extremely durable and should provide a long life. The boot lace hook is reinforced with Hypalon to increase durability.  Now moving to the top of the gaiter, the cinch closure is easy to use, and the tag ends are snagless.  Again, making these useable for different body types.  Lastly, the fully seamless design is ingenious which will surely lead to a longer life expectancy.

The Kutana Gaiter features a microporous hydrophobic TORAY Entrant membrane that breathes even when activity level is minimal and absorbs very little water for incredibly fast dry times. The durable stretch nylon 6/6 face fabric offers incredible tear strength for its weight class and stays dry longer, thanks to the highly durable K-DWR treatment. It features a reinforced 330D Cordura internal lining for added structure, durability, and boot protection.

The hook-and-loop anchored bootstrap easily adjusts to your boots without the use of buckles. The TPU-coated bootstrap is highly durable, even across sharp rocks.   The top closure drawcord features an easy-to-use cinch system with split ends to avoid snags on the brush. A silicone print traction strip also keeps the gaiter held in place.

The Kutana Gaiter is positioned between the KUIU Scree Gaiters and KUIU Yukon HD Gaiters, making it the ideal choice when wet weather is unavoidable, and temperatures are moderate.

PROS:

  • Lightweight Yet Durable
  • Waterproof and Windproof
  • 3 Way Stretch Material
  • Seamless Design

CONS:

  • Likely wont fit with large calves or bulky pants

In the Field

Wearing these has been very enjoyable.  I basically forgot they were strapped to my legs.  At 5’10” with an athletic build I purchased the XL size.  I’d say I have medium size calves, so I did need to use the cinch closure at the top of the gaiter.  I decided on the XL size to allow me to wear them with bulkier pants later in the season.  The gaiters did what they were supposed to do, keep my feet dry and debris out of my boots.

Final Thoughts

Although considered ultralight, the Kutana gaiters seem very tough for the weight.   At only four ounces each, you will forget you’re wearing them.   I can’t say I’ve used them in harsh environments but the fit and finish seem to be top notch.   If your main concern is to keep your feet dry and debris out of your boots I’m confident you’ll be pleased with these, because they’ve exceeded my expectations.  The prices of these gaiters are comparable to most high-end brands, but with KUIU’s great warranty, makes it easier to justify.  Also, if subscribe to the HuntingGearDeals.com Daily Deal email, you’ll be the first to know when they go on sale!
