XStream Straw Water Purifier Review

Torin Miller

Water is the foundation of life, and you better make sure you have your water situation dialed in every time you head afield! Not only is a lack of water in your hunting area a cause for major concern, but areas with abundant water don’t always provide a safe means for hydrating and energizing our bodies. Certainly, you can carry water with you in bottles or in a bladder, but that gets heavy, bulky and impractical – especially for extended time spent in the field. So, it’s important to have an in-field water purification system in your pack when it’s time to replenish that essential element.

These systems come in many different forms, and each one is best suited for particular circumstances. However, in my constant pursuit to reduce gear and bulk by finding the best all-around items, I decided to give the XStream Straw Water Purifier from Sagan Life a try. I’ve tested this water purification system throughout the summer as I’ve hung and checked trail cameras in the Pennsylvania mountains, and I suspect that it’ll continue to be in my pack for years to come.

Features of the XStream Straw Water Purifier

The XStream provides the best of both worlds – a portable system that serves as a straw to drink directly from a water source or as a pump to wash up or fill water containers for later drinking or camp use. First and foremost, the whole system is low weight and low bulk, weighing in at 5 ounces and consisting of a filter, a small pump and two 24-inch sections of hose. The filter is capable of filtering up to 250 gallons of contaminated water, removing 99.9% of bacteria, protozoan, and viruses. It will also remove solid particles from turbid water, but expect high water turbidity to shorten the filter’s lifespan.

As mentioned, you’ll get two 24-inch sections of hose with the filter along with a mouthpiece and a hand-help squeeze pump. The mouthpiece is similar to what you would find on a backpack water bladder. You can use the mouthpiece and one or both pieces of hose attached to the filter to create a 24 to 48-inch straw that pulls purified water directly from your water source. Simply place the filter in the water and start sipping. I found this option worked really well when you may have a shallow spring or seep that isn’t conducive to high-volume filtering required by other systems. The filter is small enough that it will submerge in even the small water sources, ensuring you can quench your thirst with just about any flow.

XStream Straw Water Purifier Review Summary

If you find a larger source of H20, and you’re looking to fill up on water to continue your hunt, the hand-help pump is a great option. Again, place the filter in the water source, but this time you’ll squeeze the pump. It shoots out a higher volume of purified water that’s perfect for washing up, filling containers, or sharing with others. I used the pump to fill up my trusty Nalgene bottle, and I was topped off after very little time and with very little effort!

XStream Straw Water Purifier Review Summary

While testing the XStream Straw, I purposely sought out water that I wouldn’t think about drinking otherwise. The Pennsylvania mountains are full of springs and clean streams, which sometimes lure hunters and other recreators into taking a direct sip. This typically isn’t a good idea – you never know what’s actually in the water, and purification is still recommended. But I wanted to test the system on some backwater slack, and I drank both directly via the mouthpiece and from my filled water bottle. The water was clear and tasted great. And more importantly, my stomach didn’t act up in the slightest. I’m confident in the XStream’s filtering capability, which should be the top concern with any water purification system. As a bonus, though, the XStream by Sagan Life is a lightweight, low-bulk do-it-all system, and that adds the cherry on top.
