Lacrosse Windrose 8″ Uninsulated Boot Review

Ryan Bailey

On the Hunt for a Boot!

When it comes to hunting, not many things can ruin a good hunt quicker than an uncomfortable pair of boots or your feet getting cold while on stand.  Over the years, I’ve tried various brands and different types of boots.  When I discovered the Windrose from Lacrosse Footwear, I had my reservations because I haven’t had the best luck with uninsulated boots that aren’t rubber – but the results surprised me and may surprise you as well!  After being on the hunt for a pair of boots to fit my needs, I decided to take the plunge and purchase the uninsulated version of the Windrose boots in early 2020 and have been wearing them ever since.

LaCrosse Windrose Boot Review | Comfort and Feel

The first thing I noticed about the boots was their athletic feel.  I had read on Lacrosse’s website that the Windrose had an athletic shoe feel, but you never know how those claims will live up to your expectations.  The Windrose lived up to their description almost immediately.  Rather than feeling like an 8-inch boot, they felt like wearing tennis shoes with a little extra support around and above the ankle.  At first, I wondered if this athletic fit/feel would wear off or if the inside of the boot would begin to deteriorate and change their feel.  After two years of wear, I’m happy to report that they are just as comfortable today as they were the day I put them on.

Multi-Purpose

When I purchased the Windrose boots, I had planned to wear them to turkey hunt and deer hunt early season.  During turkey season, I often walk several miles on each hunt, and comfort is the most important thing for my boots.  I began wearing the Windrose boots in the turkey season of 2020.  I quickly realized that they checked the appropriate boxes I needed for turkey hunting boots, and pushed them to their limits during the first season.  They passed all of the tests!

Then came the summer scouting season.  They again were my primary choice of footwear and I had no issues.  After wearing them through turkey season and all summer, I was beginning to build confidence in the boots and there was no question of what I would be wearing when deer season came.  But as the first part of the season passed by, I began contemplating what I would be wearing during the cold for the 2020 season.  It was becoming hard for me to leave the Windrose boots sitting at the house knowing the comfort they would provide.  So after thoughtful consideration, I decided to wear the Windrose boots throughout the remainder of the season and manage the temperatures by changing my choice of socks (since I had purchased the uninsulated version).  They again lived up to my expectations as I paired them with multiple types of socks throughout the season, including thick merino wool socks on the extremely cold days.

Waterproof

Many times in the past when I’ve purchased non-rubber boots, I’ve had issues with the boots beginning to leak.  My fear with the Windrose was just that.  How long would they keep water out? Could I get a full season out of them?  Much to my surprise, the Windrose boots have performed flawlessly in this aspect.  This is my second full season wearing them and they have remained waterproof throughout my use of them.  I’ve primarily worn them through tall wet grass and small streams, and have been very pleased with the results!

Multiple Options

When I purchased the Windrose boots, I had decided to get the uninsulated version because of my intentions to wear them in multiple seasons for different applications.  Although I went with the uninsulated version, Lacrosse Footwear offers two other options.  The other two options are 600g or 1,000g of insulation.  If I were to purchase these boots for the specific purpose of hunting in cold weather, I would choose one of these options.  But the best part is, you have options!

Price

Some people may look at the price of the Windrose to be a negative point.  At $160 for the uninsulated, $170 for the 600g, and $180 for the 1,000g, I personally feel the Windrose boots are priced appropriately for the quality of boot you get.  After looking at other boots in this category, it appears the Windrose are priced comparably.

LaCrosse Windrose Boot Review Summary

No matter what application you have in mind, these boots can meet your needs!  I’ve been thoroughly impressed with these boots and plan to continue to wear them for all of the applications I listed above.  This is my second full season wearing them and they have remained true to their description and have lived up to my expectations.  If you are looking for a good pair of boots, give the Lacrosse Footwear Windrose a try!  For a compilation of the best deals and discounts on Lacrosse Boots, check out this page that refreshes with discounts on Lacrosse footwear every time you view it.
