Engel 30-Quart Cooler Drybox with Rodholders Review

Nick Chandler

If you’ve lived here in Florida for very long, you will discover the need for an excellent cooler to be very high. This day in time, there are many different brands. Some obviously a lot better in quality. In my opinion, when it’s in the budget, one of the higher quality coolers is definitely the way to go.

Engel 30-Quart Drybox Cooler Features

I personally have several other coolers but needed something smaller that could also be handy to use on my kayak. That’s when I came across the Engel Cooler/Drybox with removable rod holders. What first stood out to me with this product is the thinner walls of the structure giving you more space for actual packing space, mainly when using for a dry box or on a kayak space is tight. Other key features and robust stainless latches, an airtight lid seal, and a quality feel to the plastic components. The Engel 30-Quart Drybox Cooler measures out at 18”W x 12.5”D x 14.5”T. With the rod holders, there is an additional 2.75” on each side. The insulated walls are one inch thick, and the lid measures 1.75”. The cooler comes with a 9” x 5.25” plastic tray, 2.5” deep. This welcomed addition sits on a lip at the top of the cooler, helping keep items separated.

Testing the Engel 30-Quart Drybox Cooler

I have used this cooler for a little over a month, and it has now reached some of the hottest weather we usually see here in Florida. At first, I was a bit concerned with the thinner insulated walls, but shockingly it holds ice for me around 20-24 hrs even leaving it in the cab of my truck throughout the day. On the dry box side of things, I had no problem with any water getting in with the few test runs on my kayak.

Engel 30 Quart Cooler Drybox Review Summary

After using this cooler almost daily for a little over a month, I feel comfortable saying it’s an excellent product and well worth $100. It’s a product you can instantly see and feel the quality in the materials. Every time I break this cooler out, it immediately strikes interest from bystanders because of the unique appearance. The only thing I would change is the hinges. Although I have not had any problems with them, and they may hold up just fine, my past experience is plastic hinges don’t usually hold up to heavy use. For anyone looking for a dual-purpose cooler/drybox, I give this one two thumbs up!

PROS:

  • Thinner walls giving you more inner space per size
  • Optional removable rod holders for poles or any other gear
  • A solid handle on lid or shoulder strap for heavier, longer loads

CONS:

  • Small plastic hinges
  •  No padding on shoulder strap for heavy loads
