Muck Men’s Apex Mid Zip Boot Review

George Konetes

Finding a quality waterproof boot for early-season hunts is rare.  Either they’re comfortable and light or they’re waterproof and too warm.  However, the Muck Men’s Apex Mid Zip Boots combines all of the necessary traits to make a great early-season boot that will keep your feet dry and comfortable.

At first observation, these boots offer two unique design features that traditional Muck Boots do not offer.  The first is the smaller size, as they’re only 7.9″ tall, and the other is the zipper design.  We will dive deeper into these features and my thoughts on how these boots perform in the field below.

Testing boots is often a matter of personal opinion, which makes it hard to quantify the results.  Ensuring you’re utilizing the product for its designated purpose is the first step in enjoying the boot and getting the most out of it.  For me, these boots are ideal when I need to keep my feet dry during hunts where temperatures range between 40 to 65 degrees.  Any hotter and all boots feel too warm, let alone a waterproof boot like these.  Any colder than 40 degrees and these boots aren’t warm enough unless I’m walking around.

Muck Men’s Apex Mid Zip Boot | Performance

These boots are built to withstand muddy and wet environments and shine in the sloppiest conditions, as long as the muck doesn’t get too deep as they’re less than 8″ tall.  On top of being waterproof, they’re breathable, flexible, and easy to clean.  As a bowhunter, I’m used to climbing in and out of treestands and lug soles are a MUST, thankfully, these boots have a right-angle heel to prevent you from slipping while climbing.

Hiking in the boots to and from the stand isn’t an issue but it’s not a boot that I’d wear on a backcountry elk hunt as it’s a slip-on boot and doesn’t provide the necessary ankle support.  That doesn’t mean they’re not ideal for deer and turkey hunting applications, which I’m more prone to doing.  During testing, the waterproof zipper did its job and they haven’t leaked yet, but it does present some challenges.

Muck Men’s Apex Mid Zip Boot | Fit and Feel

As for the fit of the Muck Apex Mid Zip Boot, they ride about two inches above my ankle, which is where I prefer my boots for the majority of hunting season.  The only time I wear taller boots is when I’m crossing a creek to get to my hunting destination. They fit true to size and are consistent with other Muck Boots that I’ve owned, they’re just a lot lighter.

The biggest issue that I have with the fit and design of these boots is the way they rub the front of my leg at the top of my zipper.  The tongue of the boot extends up just high enough to protect you from the zipper, but it’s not thick enough.  Also, if you get in a hurry and leave the zipper in the upright position and strap the boots closed with the velcro closure, then you can really feel the discomfort.  Thicker socks help with this and it’s manageable nevertheless.

Should You Buy the Muck Men’s Apex Mid Zip Boots?

So, would I recommend spending $150 on these boots?   Yes, they perform as designed and provide a unique boot to keep your foot dry in wet conditions without the extra bulk and warmth of taller boots.  They performed well in the conditions in which they were designed to be utilized.  There’s no one boot fits all scenarios, so having a boot for different scenarios is key to getting the best out of the boot.   These are my quick and easy go-to boots for checking trail cameras and in-season scouting when I need to protect myself in wet conditions.  They’re ideal for turkey hunting and I anticipate utilizing them a lot during the upcoming spring Gobbler season as well.

Muck Men’s Apex Mid Zip Boot Review | Potential Improvements

The only issue that I have with these boots is where the top of the zipper touches my leg when walking uphill.  There’s a lot of pressure when my foot is flexed in the upward position during climbing and it has rubbed my legs raw after long hikes.  Wearing a thicker sock certainly helps, but it adds to the warmth of the boot, so it’s not always the best option.  What I did was put a large, thick bandaid in the area to prevent the rubbing if I planned to wear them on long hikes.  Short hikes aren’t that big of a deal unless you’re climbing a lot.  Other than that, they’re great!

PROS:

  • Waterproof and Breathable

  • Lightweight

  • Good tread/grip

  • Fast and easy to put on/off

  • Numerous styles/colors/patterns

CONS:

  • Rub My Leg at Top of Zipper

The waterproof and insulated features help keep your feet dry and warm, making them a reliable choice for hunters.
  3. What makes Muck Boots ideal for hunting?
    • Muck Boots are ideal for hunting due to several key features:
      • Waterproofing: They are 100% waterproof, which is essential when hunting in wet or muddy environments.
      • Insulation: Many Muck Boot models come with insulation, keeping your feet warm in cold weather.
      • Durability: These boots are built to withstand rugged terrain and harsh conditions, making them a reliable choice for hunters.
  4. Which Muck Boot model is best for hunting?
  5. Are Muck Boots waterproof?
    • Yes, Muck Boots are designed to be completely waterproof. They are made with high-quality rubber or neoprene uppers that keep water out, making them ideal for wet and muddy hunting conditions.
  6. Do Muck Boots keep your feet warm in cold weather?
    • Many Muck Boot models come with insulation, which helps to keep your feet warm in cold weather. The level of insulation varies by model, so you can choose the one that suits the climate of your hunting area.  Steel-toe Muck Boots for work aren’t very warm when the conditions drop because of the metal in the boot.  However, the boots tested here are not steel toe, they’re hunting boots.
  7. How do you choose the right size for Muck Boots?
    • It’s essential to consult the manufacturer’s sizing chart, which is often available on their website. Muck Boots typically come in standard sizing, so you can select the size you normally wear in outdoor footwear. Keep in mind that these boots aren’t made in half sizes.
  8. Are Muck Boots comfortable for long hunts?
    • Muck Boots are known for their comfort, but individual experiences may vary depending on the application. To ensure comfort during long hunts, make sure you choose the right size.  If you’re hunting the Rocky Mountains chasing elk, I wouldn’t recommend a slip-on boot for a 10-mile hike through the mountains.
  9. What’s the best way to clean and maintain Muck Boots?
    • To clean Muck Boots, rinse off mud and dirt with water, and use a mild detergent like Elimishiled Hunt Laundry Detergent. Avoid using harsh chemicals or solvents, as they can damage the boots. After cleaning, store your boots in a cool, dry place to prevent damage and odors.

    • To break in Muck Boots, wear them for short periods initially to allow them to adapt to your feet. Gradually increase the duration as they become more comfortable. You can also use moisture-wicking socks for added comfort.  Honestly, I don’t feel that it takes a lot of time to break them in because they’re not stiff and rigid like some high-end leather boots.
  13. Are there different camo patterns available for Muck Boots for hunting?
    • Yes, Muck Boots offers various camo patterns to help hunters blend into their environments. These patterns include Realtree, Mossy Oak, and other popular camo designs to match different hunting settings.
