Finding the best batteries to power my arsenal of trail cameras hasn’t been easy or cheap!  I’ve been through my share of AA batteries in search of a battery that provides long-lasting power, without breaking the bank.  There’s nothing more frustrating that going to check a trail camera that’s been out for months, only to realize that the batteries had died shortly after putting it out.

In my search for the best-value trail camera batteries, I had the opportunity to put the Pale Blue AA USB-C Rechargeable Batteries to the test!  Here’s my review.

Self-Discharge: The dormant / self discharge characteristics of Pale Blue batteries are very low. This is one of the advantages of a lithium ion battery with a control circuit, vs an alkaline or NiMh battery, where the cell discharges directly into the circuit (no control circuit). The battery life in dormant mode depends partly on the environment. High ambient temperatures, and higher humidity, increases the internal drain. But in normal circumstances a battery installed in a device, like a door lock, will last ~12 months.

Comparison of Rechargeable AA Batteries:  Ni-MH vs Lithium-Ion

Understanding that not all rechargeable AA batteries are created equal.  Years ago, I attempted to make the switch to AA rechargeable batteries for my trail cameras because of an online review similar to this one stating the benefits of rechargeable batteries.  Little did I know, Ni-MH batteries couldn’t cut the mustard on the mountain and proved to be a total waste of money. However, there are some major differences in Ni-MH and Lithium-Ion batteries.

When comparing Ni-MH and Lithium-Ion batteries, you need to look at two things:  Cost and Practical Use.  Ni-MH batteries are a cheaper option for rechargeable batteries, while lithium-ion batteries are much more expensive.   On the performance scale, Li-ion batteries outperform NiMH at all turns, as last longer during single uses, as well as the entire life cycle of the battery. Lithium-ion batteries also charge much faster, perform better in extreme temperatures, and hold their charge for much longer than NiMH batteries.

In summary, don’t buy Ni-MH rechargeable batteries, instead, buy Lithium-Ion rechargeable batteries.

Field Testing:  Pale Blue AA Rechargeable Batteries

I’m a hunter, so I need products that are going to perform in the harshest conditions, and that’s exactly how I tested these batteries from Pale Blue.  Upon receiving a dozen AA batteries, I quickly charged them up and put them to use.  Charging speed is as advertised because it didn’t take long and I was ready to deploy them in the field.

The first test was to throw them in a cellular trail camera, as this is the most demanding trail camera on the market and traditional batteries don’t last.  Typically, I can get up to two weeks out of alkaline batteries, such as Rayovac AA batteries, and much longer out of Energizer lithium AA batteries.  I have a Tactacam Reveal XB cellular trail camera on a bait pile behind the house, so I swapped out the batteries and quickly put them to the test.

These batteries took 1,200 photos on a single charge, which was much more than I expected.  If I told you how many days they lasted, it wouldn’t sound as impressive because it wasn’t long.  However, the number of days that it lasted wasn’t impressive, but that doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things because you could leave a trail camera out in one spot all season and it might not take 1,200 photos.

These batteries shined in non-cellular trail cameras.  I could throw them in a non-cellular trail camera and not have to worry about them going dead for a much longer time.  In fact, I lost count of how many days my non-cellular camera was deployed, but it was the majority of the hunting season.  I fully expected longer-lasting performance from a non-cellular camera and they performed better than expected.  I’ve since used them to fuel high-powered flashlights and other items around the house during the offseason and haven’t had one fail, leak, or dissipate energy faster than the others.

In conclusion, Pale Blue AA USB-C rechargeable batteries are a good option for hunters seeking reliable and reusable power solutions in the field.  Through testing, I can confidently state that rechargeable lithium-ion batteries do not last as long in trail cameras as Energizer Lithium AA batteries.  This was apparent when testing these batteries in cellular trail cameras, however, after using them in non-cellular trail cameras, they performed quite well. It was nice to swap out the batteries and recharge them, instead of just throwing them in the trash.  Since hunting season has ended, we are currently using them around the house in everyday uses without issue.

The biggest question is whether or not they’re worth the initial investment.  Once you’ve made the investment, it’s easy to find ways to put them to good use in and out of hunting season.
